Where to Buy an Electric Guitar
February 5th, 2010
If you are in the market to get an electric guitar, for either yourself or for someone else who is the aspiring musician in your life, you may be put off by all of the options available. All guitarists put a great deal of importance on beginner players to begin their creative endeavors with an easy-to-play and quality instrument. Starting out by playing an electric guitar is easier for beginners than learning on an acoustic guitar because electric guitars usuallyhave lighter gauge strings as well as lower playing action while requiring decreased hand muscle in order to fret the strings. In a nutshell: when you choose to use an electric guitar, it is much easier on the fingers of the beginning musician. This allows for optimum ease of play without the discomfort of hurting fingers that usually accompanies learning to play on an acoustic model.
Getting A Well-Known Name Guitar is a Good Idea
When you purchase an electric guitar, it is usually the best idea to stick with a brand name of guitar that you know of and has a consistent history of producing quality instruments that will last through many years of usage. The extra money is usually more than well worth it, both in terms of performance and in the lifespan of your investment. Good choices include Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, BC Rich, Gretsch, and Jackson branded electric guitars. And don’t sweat it if your budding guitarist decides that they suddenly do not want to play guitar after all, by purchasing a high quality, brand name electric guitar model, you almost always get most of your money back when you decide to sell the guitar to another person. High quality guitars hold their value.
Are Used Guitars An Option?
Some people do find that they can find quality used guitars at affordable prices. Although buying an electric guitar that is pre-owned is not like buying a used PC because a guitar will never get to be obsolete or outdated, there are some disadvantages. For example, you will not be getting a warranty, although as mentioned earlier, used guitars are often as expensive as brand new ones. And you usually can’t ask for a refund of your money if the guitar has problems later on down the road like you would be able to with a brand new electric guitar.
Things to Be Aware of Before You Buy Electric Guitar
Before going out for some price comparisons on electric guitars, it is a good idea to talk to an experienced guitarist for some advice. You should also have a budget already in mind. A brand new electric guitar model can be a few hundred dollars in cost or even many thousands. Also know of any possible upgrades that you may like to have when you buy an electric guitar since some retailers charge less for the guitar and upgrades than they would for upgrading your guitar sometime later on.
If you or a family member are thinking about picking up an instrument, an electric guitar is a good place to start. Find out how to buy electric an guitar and learn to play music today.

Practice Of Selecting Guitar Cases
January 30th, 2010
Musicians, weather new or old, should find these few notes on guitar cases helpful. Case selection is an important aspect for maintaining the health and integrity of any guitar. There are basically three different types of cases: gig bags, guitar bags, and hard cases. The case not only provides protection but is also important for transporting. A case should be viewed as an important investment in the health of ones’ guitar.
The primary focal point of any case should be the safeguard of its contents and then functionality. Aesthetic quality and style should be secondary. One should also outline a reasonable budget so as to be prudent. Other factors that should be considered are the size and shape of the guitar. This can affect the type of shell case availability. Shells come in one of two types: hard and soft. Hard cases offer greater protection.
The material used in constructing the case is also an important factor to consider. Most hard cases are made of some type of composite shell while the soft shells are generally made of nylon. There are some high end and specialty cases that are made of different materials. Some of the more expensive ones might have a soft outer shell protecting a more hard inner shell. For instance, a leather outer shell would protect a carbon fiber inner layer.
They basic hard shell should have one important quality, a strong and sturdy build. There should not be any weakness in the shell or structure. This is very important especially when considering a used case. Used cases should be thoroughly checked for any damage or potential weak spots. Any material degradation could be a potential hazard.
Cases can also come with different compartments, gadgets, and enhancements. One important feature is the humidifier. Guitars require a certain level or amount of humidity to be well maintained. This benefits their performance and also their longevity. Humidifiers can be custom fitted to most cases. This all depends on the owner’s requirements.
Flight cases are useful for bands and musicians who do frequent traveling from gig to gig. Flights are made of a heavy gauge or durable metal or composite. The interior is composed of a plush material. This can be velvet like material or polystyrene. Although, there is no exclusive standard.
A more macabre but sturdy option is the so called coffin case. Coffin cases are quite deep and often times can carry multiple guitars. The exterior is made of vinyl or dark leather and the structure is made of a durable metal composite. Interior is generally a deep red or burgundy plush pillow. The pillow allows for the guitar to rest in peace through transport. There can be a deep slot bottom to support the guitar base with a diamond design to help reduce the impact from shocks.
Depending on the case, there can be space for other accessories to be stored with the guitar. Many cases have some type of pocket or pouch. For instance, mesh pouches and zipper pockets are rather popular. The more specialty cases can have individual compartments for a strap, cable, and perhaps a tuner. Also, there are options for case transport assistance. For example, some cases come with a strap for the shoulder and the larger ones, such as coffins, might have wheels. The choices are as varied as the guitars they cover.
Choose from a a bunch of spectacular guitar cases and find the perfect one for you now! When you find the guitar case that travels well and protects your guitar from wear and damage, you will be ready for the road!

Stupidly Easy Guitar Lessons
December 25th, 2009
Beginning to play a musical instrument and especially guitar is one of the most rewarding things one can do. Music is one of the few mediums that can totally cross language and cultural barriers. I love the power ripping through the amp when you strum out a bar chord on an electric. Or singing out songs over your acoustic for family and friends. Actually being able to play songs and even compose your own is an indescribable feeling. So here are some easy guitar lessons to get you going.
So a quick message to all the beginners out there. This does take time and patience, do not give up. I will never forget grabbing my first guitar for the first time knowing I would be jamming to my favorite CDs immediately. Boy was I mistaken. My fingers couldn’t even get one note right and a chord, not even a chance. I didn’t quit, I adjusted my goals and stuck to it.
Your fingers are most likely confused and in pain and it maybe just plain uncomfortable when you first pick up the guitar. Elasticity and agility are keys here and you do this through exercising those fingers. There is no trickery here, repetition is the only way to reach your objective. I know you’ve heard it before, practice makes perfect. When I was just beginning I liked to sit in front of the Tube and just repeat exercises kind of unconsciously just to get my fingers strong.
So you have two hands that need to be on the same page with each other so you will have to do drills that help both of them out. At first your fingers tips will hurt, play through that pain for as long as you can, don’t just take a break right away . Before long you will get calluses on your finger tips and the throbbing will subside. The most horrible part of starting out with the guitar is this just beginning phase. Please just stick with it and battle through it, the rewards will be infinite.
Here are some pointers for your strumming hand. This is your rhythm hand and our plucking or picking hand. Slow and steady is vital here. Practice with your pick, alternating between down strokes and up strokes. Start slow and play along as you tap your foot to keep in time. Down stroke, up stroke, down stroke, etc. Slow and steady while you alternate. Increase speed as you go. Play this on 1 string then move on to 2 strings, then 3 strings and so on as if you were practicing chords. When starting out or practicing in front of the Tube you can mute the strings with your other hand to really pay attention to the rhythm.
Moving on to the fretting hand. Your fretting hand picks the notes that you want your strumming hand to play. This is the hand that also may start to hurt and the hand that doesn’t seem to know what it is doing when first starting out. No getting around this, just take it slow and steady with patience. It is key here to get all four fingers comfortable and in sync with each other. Don’t leave your pinkie out because it is harder to get going. When practicing guitar if you find something difficult then you need to practice it more.
So here is my favorite exercise to help you play like grease. On your top string, the thick string, your E string, press your index finger on fret 1. While still pressing use your middle finger on fret two. While holding both down press your ring finger on fret three. Last but not least press your pinkie on fret four. As you are doing this you should be picking, always alternating, down and up, down and up. Now you reverse lifting the little finger, then ring, then middle, etc. Fret one, two, three, four and then back down 4, 3, 2, 1 all while you are alternating your picking down, up, down, up.
This exercise should be practiced until you can’t stand it anymore, slow and accurate. Then as it gets simpler build up your speed. Practice this on all strings, all over the fretboard. This will unlock your fingers and really get them going. Start slow and build up. Guitar is my obsession and hopefully this can help you on your way. It honestly is an amazing instrument. Videos and photos will really help burn these concepts in your brain. Check out these easy guitar lessons.

Cheap Acoustic Guitars - Considerations
December 24th, 2009
The main reason why many musical instruments are so expensive to purchase is the material which is used to make them. Certainly as you will soon discover those guitars that use materials such as wood as far more expensive than those that aren’t. But along with guitars being made from wood they are also made from graphite and plastic as well. But the problem with these kinds of cheap acoustic guitars is that they do not have the same sound quality as the wooden ones.
If you choose to buy a guitar not made from wood it will often not sound round and you may find that you give up the guitar because you become frustrated. Therefore, it is better if you can only afford to buy a cheap acoustic guitar you get one that is made from wood, rather than saving money on a guitar which you will not like playing.
When you begin your search for a cheap acoustic guitar it is best to look for those which come with a solid wooden top rather than being made from plywood. The reason for this being that those made using solid wood provide a much richer and fuller tone to the sound that they produce. Also when buying an acoustic guitar purchase one that has both a solid wood back and sides.
One such guitar you may want to consider is the Seagull S6. Which is not the cheapest acoustic guitar you can buy, but it is value for the money. It has a solid wood cedar top whilst the sides and back are made using mahogany and it is these which help it produce such a beautiful sound. In fact this is a guitar that even professional musicians will keep, even though they may have several other and more expensive guitars in their collection.
You can expect to pay around $400 to $500 for this guitar, but if you are really serious about learning to play the guitar then it is wise to invest a little extra in the instrument you buy. However, if you search online you may well find that you are actually able to get some really great deals on this guitar if you spend time looking for it.
Along with the Seagull S6 another very good acoustic guitar to consider purchasing and which is costs less is the Yamaha F310. Rather than a solid wood cedar top this has a spruce one instead. But as with the Seagull S6 this guitar has a mahogany back and sides. On average you can expect to pay between $150 and $200 for this particular guitar and is a very common choice for those people who are serious about learning to play the guitar.
Another guitar which is much cheaper to buy than the Seagull S6 is the Epiphone DR-100 which you can buy for between $120 and $150. But although it is slightly cheaper than the Yamaha F310 it is actually made using the exact same materials. So the top is made from spruce and the back and sides from mahogany. If you are looking for the perfect wood guitar when learning to play then this could be the perfect one for you. However, you will at some point when you can play it well have to upgrade to another make and model.
Although there are lots of different guitars available which can be purchased for less than $100 these are not the type that you should be buying when learning to play the guitar. The reason being is that you will find that the sound they produce is terrible because of the materials they have been made from. Which as many others have found results in them finding it difficult to play and so decide to give up learning how to play them altogether.
So if you are really serious about getting a cheap acoustic guitar either for your self or your child to play then avoid those in the $100 or less range. Rather if your budget is somewhat restricted go to your local music or guitar store and see if they have any second hand ones for sale. Often you can pick up a really good but cheap acoustic guitars that you can then try out before making a purchase.
Above we have looked at various different kinds of cheap acoustic guitars that you should consider investing money in when thinking about find outing to play one. If you would like to find out more about acoustic guitars and how to play them then please click here Acoustic Guitar Information.

The Influence Of Blues Guitar On Modern Music
December 22nd, 2009
Everybody interested in modern music sooner or later want to ask the question, “Where did it begin?” Well, if you leave blues guitar music out, you will not have much of an answer. So let us look at where the blues came from, where it went and who it met on the way.
We will also take a look at the “blues guitar sound” and how it has its unique effect on our feelings. The blues as a musical phenomenon began around 1911 when W.C. Handy published popular songs, notably “Memphis Blues” and “St Louis Blues”, which affected the hearts and souls of the black people. By the nineteen twenties the general population were beginning to hear this new music through its influence on jazz. Early blues singers like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday sang with jazz bands while others played with “jug bands” accompanied by fiddle, kazoo and washboard.
Of course to people like W. C. Handy who were brought up singing in church, the piano was the natural instrumental accompaniment to their songs. But the guitar is portable and always was popular so it had to have a place in blues and jazz. Blues guitar players like twelve string guitarist Leadbelly and future electric guitar player B.B. King were making sure the guitar would be an integral part of the blues. Other blues guitarists made their living in smoky saloons playing slide guitar using a bottle neck or the blade of a knife to fret the notes.
After the Second World War young artists like Elvis Presley and Bill Haley were wrapping the blues in a new package called “rock’n'roll” and the players of the electric blues guitar like B.B. King were heralding the arrival of the lead guitar, soon to be a great attraction for both musicians and audiences. Throughout the evolution of the blues the guitar had always taken its turn for solos in jazz bands but now it competed with the singer for the attention of the audience.
Blues guitar can be played in any key that takes your fancy and comes in three basic forms: eight bars, for example “Heartbreak Hotel”, sixteen bars like “Saint James Infirmary” and twelve bars like “St. Louis Blues”. For some reason the twelve bar blues form is way more singer-friendly and popular with audiences than the other two, and it is the basis of many great songs outside the blues idiom.
If you go poking around the internet you will find that the blues scales are just your garden variety major and minor scales except that the third, fifth and seventh notes are played flat. However, you may be astonished to learn that blues players managed for centuries without knowing about European musical theory. They learnt to sing and play from their families and friends just as many of the young white blues players of the nineteen sixties learnt from imitating the artists they heard on records.
And this is where the blues takes another direction. After years of imitating their idols something odd happened to the white blues guitar players in Britain and the USA. They developed their own authentic, original styles. The older blues players even began using the new arrangements of classic songs and adopting some of the unbluesy musical innovations introduced by young white guitarists like Eric Clapton. So the beat goes on. A foreign culture influences American popular music and in turn gets fresh input from a new generation of guitar players from all over the world.
