Song Writing Vocabulary

August 20th, 2010

I have discussed with you Song Writing for Guitar or for other musical instruments as well as your voice. It is now time to discuss some terminologies used in music and song writing. These are substance, vocal phrasing, mood, metre, prosody and style.

In composing songs, the common words and terms that are used in a normal conversation are also used. It can be that it started out as a poem and then somebody made some innovations by putting music into it until finally it became a song that showcases the flair or skills of the composer and the music writer. We call this as the message of the song which the musician wanted to tell. The words which send out the song’s message are the substance that I am referring to.

The manner in which you make use of your voice to stress the song’s lyrics is referred to as Vocal Phrasing. To better put it, sing in a conversational manner and you get your audience response well. The way the song is sung with the appropriate beat, tempo, mood, melody should be given emphasis. This is why you need to know the proper way of producing your vowels, stretching the notes and words if necessary. If you have to recite a poem or an oratorical piece, you need to be able to pronounce the words correctly and that is the way you should be singing as well. This is the test the range of your voice. Phrasing like in a conversation must be executed well in order to appropriately impart what you really mean.

The Emotion sets the ambiance of the song which can be greatly controlled by the capability of the singer’s tone of voice as well as in the apposite way of rendering the song. The words, the phrasing, the stresses all account for the song’s ambience that will in turn touch the hearts of the listeners. It is therefore very essential that the singer aptly enunciate the words in the song. Without this ability, the listener will not be able to relate with the song; it may be that the latter can appreciate the tune but cannot fathom what it really means.

The Measure. In music, measure is very essential as this is where you put together the usual language we use in communicating that will be in consonance with the tune. The composer must not have too many wordings in the arrangement that tend to crowd and at the same time will make the singer to always change the speed just to be able to follow the tune. The number of words and phrases for every canto or verse must be in agreement with the melody. You will notice that most protest and anti-war songs have this trait. The knack of the singer to stretch and not to stretched the wordings and syllables and the quantity of wordings in a canto or row completes the true definition of a good quality measure in a song and which will give the one singing it an allowance to catch his breath and to bring the right locution.

The Poetic Rhythm. Also known as prosody is the combination of the beat, words, and tune and chord progression. All of these must go hand in hand in order that the thought of the song and its musical presentation will complement each one. It is the factor behind the lyrics measure to work in combination with the idea of the song and its tenor. Let us take the example of a song that has a hearty beat. You will notice that the chord progression used in these types of songs is major, whereas dull and lifeless songs have the minor chord progression. Uniting the substance, tenor, metre, wordings, tune and chord progression is the role of prosody.

The Style. This is what is said to be the signature of a composer or a singer. By the mere mention of your name, the audience will already know the category of songs that you compose or sing. There are, however, some composers who have tried to compose songs which are not their forte and sad to say, did not earn another feather in their cap. A music avid fan would be able to distinguish the difference of the song’s beat. A Beatles’ song can never be mistaken as a Rolling Stones composition and vice versa.

Pick Ups: Heart Of An Electric Guitar

July 14th, 2010

Most people are impressed with how an electric guitar sounds. Great solos from legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton and other legends have been stuck in people’s minds. Some have been influenced to play because they like the raw, distorted sound of a guitar solo.

These famous guitar heroes were particularly emulated especially by young people. As it is important to know how to play the guitar, I think it is also essential to know that guitar pick ups are the one that dictates the tone of an electric guitar. If you want to buy one, select between a single coil and humbucker type pick up.

If you want quality sounding guitar then you need to make sure you buy the best pick up that suits your personality and taste. For a clear and high end sound, a single coil like Fender Stratocaster is preferred. If you want to have a tone that is flat and round in sound, you need a humbucker like Gibson guitars.

When choosing a pick up, the quality differs from the magnets being used. Lot of magnets is improvised but here are the most widely used in the market: Alnico 2, Alnico 5 and Ceramic. Plus they added Alnico 8 and Neodymium in the line up as a result of technology and innovation. These magnets are capable of swallowing the sound of the string when played.

Variety of brands has been released and has been a great help in the guitar industry. Popular brands like EMG, Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Bill Lawrence and Fishman. Also new innovations such as Lace sensors were at the top of the line. Choose a brand that suits your taste, whether it will be a high output distorted sound or a low output jazzy sound.

Regardless of the type of music you play, you can always get the right pick up for your guitar. The things mentioned were just guidelines for a guitarist to consider, make sure to have a good understanding about the pick up you are about to purchase and if possible do a sound test to check if it best suits you.

Bring out the best in your guitar, start upgrading your pick up and hear the difference. Best sounding pick ups are available in the web for you to check.

Learning More About Playing Guitar

June 29th, 2010

Music education is broad and complicated, especially to those who are aspiring to unlock the melodic codes that make it pleasant and easy to the ears. There are those who choose to learn how to play the piano, violin, trumpet, saxophone and other instruments. However, there are many people all over the world who are obsessed about learning guitar.

Learning guitar is considered one of the effective ways to cultivate your knowledge in music. They say that guitar is easy to learn compared to other musical instruments. Plus, the guitar is lighter than other instruments - you would be able to bring it anywhere you want to practice. The piano is heavy and has so many keys for you to mind but the guitar has six strings and few frets to remember. You can completely learn the guitar in your own time however; there are factors that you should bear in mind. Learning guitar is not limited to a certain genre but you can reach your desired level if you put few things in constant practice.

Your playing position is the first thing that you should pay close attention to. Would you like to sit or stand during learning guitar session? Sitting or standing position directly affects the force of the hands compared to the sound of the string that you want to strum or pluck. You should know that making the improper playing position would lead to difficulty in using chord patterns. Proper playing position would give you less stress while playing the guitar. Plus, it would give less stress on other muscles in your body. With proper playing position, you would have an easy breathing as you strum or pluck along the song that you are playing.

The position of your hands is another thing to watch out for when learning guitar. Many guitar students worldwide give less attention on the position of their hands. These learners only focus their attention on how to execute a fascinating chord and making a good-sounding guitar riffs. Proper hand position would give you clear passage to every note on the fret board. Proper hand position would also prevent cramps from occurring while you are playing your guitar.

Last, is the thing that some learners often take for granted - practice. These days, there are plenty of resources that one can get when it comes to guitar playing. There are instructional books, ebooks and videos that teach the proper way of playing the guitar. However, because of the richness of these resources, most learners think that they could only play once or twice a day. You should know that learning guitar doesn’t stop on having the most advanced instructions. Constant practice is always observed even by the most accomplished guitar players worldwide.

Learning guitar is fun; you can explore every possibility at your very own pace. You can practice alone or together with your friends. What’s important is that you learn the theory behind playing basics slowly but surely. You may want to memorize the guitar chords chart but at the end of the day, only you can tell if you have accomplished what you hoped to accomplish. Just have the right attitude and always make sure that you always practiced what you have learned about.

Pearl Jam Backspacer Guitar Player Perspective

May 30th, 2010

The album “Backspacer” by Pearl Jam came out in late 2009. It was their ninth studio album. There were many, many, many live albums along the way. But it had definitely a different sound. They started working on it in 2008, but they brought in a producer that they had worked with before, Brendan O’Brien, and kind of paired things down. We hear he’s very honest about making the band stay true to the sounds that he felt they should do. As a matter of fact, Jeff Ament’s complaint, not complaint, but he said, “He brings a brutally honest approach to what he think is working and what isn’t. And it really moves things along.” So they don’t get weighted down with ideas that maybe aren’t going anywhere or that aren’t very good. So he’s somebody that the band really trusted, the way the Beatles trusted George Martin to make some decisions and just to guide the path.

One thing to note here is that the songs are a bit different from what you normally hear out of a Pearl Jam album. There are a lot more acoustic guitar sounds like in “Just Breathe.” The rest of the album consists of “Gonna See My Friend,” “Got Some,” “The Fixer,” “Johnny Guitar,” “Amongst the Waves,” “Unthought Known,” “Supersonic,” “Speed of Sound,” “Force of Nature,” and “The End.”

If by chance you’re a Canadian iTunes user there is a bonus track, which is called; “Better Man.” This was a song that Eddie Vedder wrote long before he met the band. Probably one of the most intriguing examples is with the “Just Breathe” song. He talks about the positive things in life and provides a relaxing, yet smelling of the roses type of appeal. However, on a musical platform it is very interesting since it’s extremely fast, but offers simple fingerpicking.

Now, there are a lot of songs like this in the history of classis rock. And two that come to mind, of course, are “Black Bird” by the Beatles; Paul Mc Cartney’s solo guitar song, and “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas. Two other very similar songs that have a fairly simple and regular fingerpicking pattern in them, but they go so fast that it makes them not a good song for a beginning guitar player or a song that a guitar player, a beginner especially, has to work hard at to get. So that the techniques are very basic and simple, but they’re executed very, very quickly, and that’s what happens in “Just Breathe”. It features chords just in the key of “C”, normal chords in the key of “C”. A “C” major chord and a “G” major chord back and forth for a long time, which would be chords one and five in the key, and then an “A” minor chord and an “F” chord which would be chords six and four. So it’s again… it’s almost a minimalist track in that. In it, it’s just got two simple chords going back and forth for a while and not a whole lot of fancy stuff happening.

When you look at “Just Breathe” it offers techniques that are basic and simple, but offers a well executed quick pattern. In the key of “C,” is one of the feature chords, as well as a “C” major and “G” major that are played back and forth for a long period of time. If you’re look at the chords these would be 1 and 5, but the “A” minor and “F” chord are considered as 6 and 4. So when you play it on your own you are just going back and forth with two different chords.

It’s a song I offer up to my students all the time. I consider this to be the best fingerpicking song out there for teaching purposes. Now, there will be times when I offer up “Dust in the Wind” or “Black Bird,” but not nearly as much. You also have “Dear Prudence” available or “Julia,” but they aren’t nearly as fast because Lennon couldn’t play the “quick” guitar.

Don’t forget, you can find “Just Breathe” on the “Backspacer” album. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the interesting story behind the title. It basically revolves around typewriters, and the “backspace” button you could find on it. Computers today have the “delete” button, but Vedder still chooses typewriters over PCs to write lyrics.

So there are a lot of people that have come up with titles of things and then reuse them at many times in their career. I was once in a band called Yesterday’s News, and I eventually made an album called “Yesterday’s News”, but it was a solo guitar album. So if you want to check that out, the history of the band is probably not too easily available other than like right here where you are now. So I’ll save that for another day as well.

Whatever the case may be there has been all kinds of people that come up with titles and reuse them throughout a career. I did this myself a long time ago when I was in a band called; Yesterday’s News. Great name right? Well, later on I made a solo guitar album and called it; Yesterday’s News. You can check more on that right here, which is probably the best place to find information on it. Anyways, “Just Breathe” is perfect for any type of intermediate player or someone who just wants to work on their speed and play a bit faster. It’s a Travis picking technique that was used by Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Jackson Browne, and even in the Eagles and Gordon Lightfoot songs.

Guitar and music is a lifelong passion of mine. For more information on Guitar Lessons or to learn Pearl Jam Just Breathe guitar lesson visit TotallyGuitars.com.

Guitar Modules For Kids - Your Special Prodigy

May 10th, 2010

As you without doubt have realized by now, training your children in anything the proper way is a hard task. There are a complete set of factors at play that you don’t even consider as an adult. Here are some of the most far-reaching things to be pondering :

1) Age : As we all dream about having the next musical child wonder who can play your Pink Floyd record collection blindfolded before they go to school, you must remember that most guitar lessons for kids makes provision for children in junior school and up. Guitar lessons for kids are sometimes concentrated on ages 7 and up.

2) Aptitude : One or two children just get things quicker than others. You see that kid who skates like he has been doing it before he learnt to crawl, one who does mathematics you will never be able to and one who does back-flips on his bike without batting an eyelid. Just like these, some children pick up basic concepts about music as far as guitar goes faster than others. If your child demonstrates a clear feeling for rhythm and notes from an earlier age than seven, you can go ahead and try some guitar lessons for kids earlier.

The fundamental problem when you sign your child up to guitar lessons for children is finding a guitar that has been designed for children. A guitar made for adults simply will not do, believe me do not squander your money on a large guitar now. If you go to a good music shop you shouldn’t have any problem from the get-go in finding a smaller guitar.

Guitar buyer’s tip : If you’re acquiring the guitar for guitar lessons for children, be sure to check the price . Makers tend to charge outrageous amounts for a small guitar because they know we as mums and dads will pay this for our kids.

Eventually, we wish to make sure you know the connotation when it comes to guitar lessons for youngsters and the tutor who will be doing the teaching.

The very last thing you would need is your child stopping their lessons due to a trainer putting unnecessary amounts of pressure on them. Guitar lessons for children is meant to always continue being enjoyable! The time for being more trained will come with age.

Two of the most popular instruments played today are the piano and guitar although we see the number of people learning to play guitar on the rise due to convenience, affordability, and pleasure. But let’s face it, if you want to play guitar it’s because you love music in the first place and you love the way it sounds when played on a guitar. Music can induce feelings of joy, romance, dream state or meditation and aid in healing. Music affects the physical body, including secretions of hormones, the heart rate, the emotions, the mind, and the energy body. Music is magical, the heart of the world, and the unspoken universal language.

The next one is the Steel String Acoustic guitar. It has fundamentally the same design as the one mentioned earlier which is the classical guitar. The only difference is that the strings are made from steel for a clearer sound and a louder too but it will make your fingers a little pain at the beginning because the strings are a little bit harder than the nylon strings. But as soon as you get used to it, the soreness will eventually disappear but will leave your fingers a slight hardened part to the area where it gets contact with the string.

Electric guitar is famous for hard sounds or rock sounds and could be enlarged to a certain extent. While an acoustic guitar could provide you a more pleasing sound and a fuller sound too. An electric guitar is best for playing solo and sometimes with other accompaniments like the drums and keyboard. An acoustic guitar is best for classical music, light and easy music which involves light strumming.

These guitars have a firm body and needs an external amplifier to a more loud sound to a certain extent that everyone could enjoy listening. Whereas the acoustic guitar has a hollow type of body which produces a more pleasing sound and could be intensified acoustically.

Most of all learning guitar is about learning to enjoy the instrument, it is an adventure and your teacher must be able to excite and inspire you. When you start to learn how to play guitar, it is important that you pick the right song to start with. A good tutor will always ask you what you are interested in playing.
